The sticker price on a humidifier tells you almost nothing about what it actually costs to own. Filters and wicks: the cost people forget

This is where two units with identical electricity bills can drift apart over a season. Evaporative humidifiers pull air through a wick filter that has to be replaced, usually every one to three months during heavy use. Ultrasonic units are typically filterless, though many now include a small demineralization cartridge.

The warm-mist unit costs more than double the ultrasonic to run, almost entirely on electricity. If someone has a medical reason to prefer warm mist, that is a fair trade. But nobody should pay that premium by accident.

How to shrink the number

You have more control over running cost than the type alone suggests. A few habits move the needle.
