The first air purifier I ever tested for a client was a sleek tower that cost close to $400 and did almost nothing. It had a touchscreen, a phone app, three colored mood lights, and a filter the size of a paperback book. In a normal living room it could barely keep up with a scented candle.
That machine taught me the single most useful lesson in this whole category: the number that matters is printed in small type on the box, and it is not the price.
This is a shopping walkthrough, not a physics lecture. I want you to leave able to stand in an aisle, or scroll a product page, and know within about a minute whether a purifier fits your room or is selling you lights.
Before you start: know your room
Everything downstream depends on one measurement. Grab the square footage of the room where the purifier will actually live, and note the ceiling height while you are at it. Standard height is 8 feet; if yours is 9 or 10, the machine has more air to move and you will want to size up.
A common mistake I see: people buy for the whole house and set the unit in the hallway. Air purifiers are room devices. One good unit in the bedroom you sleep in beats one weak unit trying to cover an open floor plan.
Measure the room you spend the most hours in, usually a bedroom or a home office. That is where cleaner air pays off most, because you are breathing it 6-8 hours a night.
Step 1: Read the CADR number first

CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. It tells you how much clean air the unit pushes out, measured in cubic feet per minute, tested by an independent lab. Most boxes list three CADR numbers: smoke, dust, and pollen. For general use, look at the smoke number, since fine smoke particles are the hardest to catch.
Here is the rule I use in the field, drawn from the AHAM sizing standard the industry follows.
Your smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room’s square footage. A 300 square foot room wants a CADR of about 200 or higher. That target gets you roughly five air changes per hour, which is what allergy and asthma folks generally aim for.
If a listing hides the CADR or replaces it with a vague “cleans up to 1,500 sq ft” claim, be skeptical. That big-coverage number is usually measured at a lazy two air changes per hour, which does little for allergies. A unit rated at 1,500 square feet on the box is often a genuine 300-400 square foot performer once you demand real cleaning.
Step 2: Choose the filter that fits your problem
The filter is the engine. Match it to what you are actually trying to remove.
True HEPA for particles
A true HEPA filter captures 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 microns. That covers pollen, dust, dander, mold spores, and most smoke. Watch the wording. “HEPA-type,” “HEPA-like,” or “99 percent” are marketing dodges for a cheaper filter that does not meet the real standard. You want the words “true HEPA” or the specific 99.97 percent figure.
Activated carbon for odors and gases
HEPA does not touch smells or chemical fumes. For cooking odor, pet smell, wildfire smoke gases, or off-gassing from new furniture, you need a real activated carbon stage. A thin carbon-coated mesh is nearly useless; look for a listing that states carbon weight, ideally a pound or more of pellets.
Some “washable” HEPA filters are not true HEPA and lose efficiency after a rinse. If a filter promises you never replace it, read the fine print. Genuine HEPA media is disposable by design.
Step 3: Skip the features that do not clean air

This is where money leaks. A lot of the price gap between a $130 unit and a $400 unit is features that add cost, not clean air.

A purifier’s job is to move a lot of air through good filters, quietly. Almost everything past that is upsell.

Step 4: Check noise and the real running cost
A purifier only works when it is running, and people switch off units that roar. Check the decibel rating on the highest setting you plan to use. Under about 50 dB on medium is livable in a bedroom; 55 dB and up gets intrusive at night.
Then find the replacement filter price and schedule before you buy. This is the number sellers bury.

A quick worked example
Say you have a 250 square foot bedroom with 8 foot ceilings and a cat. Your CADR target is about 165 or higher. You want true HEPA for the dander and a decent carbon stage for litter box odor.
You find two units. Unit A is $180, smoke CADR 190, true HEPA plus a half-pound carbon layer, 48 dB on medium, filters $45 a year. Unit B is $330, smoke CADR 160, ionizer, UV lamp, app, and mood lights, filters $85 a year. Unit A is the better buy on every measure that touches the air. Unit B is selling you the touchscreen.
That is the whole decision in one paragraph. Size, filter, noise, filter cost. The rest is scenery.
