A warm mist unit holds water at or near boiling. If a curious kid or a cat tips it off a shelf, or pries the top open, that is hot water on skin. The CDC and most pediatric sources have flagged tip-over scalds from warm steam vaporizers for years, which is why hospital nurseries almost always use cool mist.

Cool mist removes the burn risk entirely. There is no hot water and no heating element. The tradeoff is that ultrasonic cool mist models can spray fine mineral dust and, if the tank is dirty, aerosolize whatever is growing in there. That is a cleaning problem, not a burn problem, and cleaning is something you control.

Watch out

A warm mist vaporizer placed on the floor next to a crib is the classic scald setup. If you must use warm mist near a child, mount it high, out of reach, and away from where a cord can be yanked.

Germ control and what ends up in the air

Here warm mist has a genuine edge. Because it boils the water first, it kills most bacteria and mold spores before the vapor ever leaves the tank. You are breathing sterilized moisture.

Cool mist does not sterilize anything. An evaporative wick model traps a lot of minerals and gunk in the wick, so what reaches the air is fairly clean, but the wick itself grows biofilm if you ignore it. An ultrasonic cool mist model is the least forgiving: it will fling minerals and microbes into the room as fine particles if you let the tank sit dirty.

The warm mist machine cleans the water for you. The cool mist machine trusts you to clean it yourself. Know which kind of person you are before you buy.

Over a heating season of nightly use, the warm mist electricity difference might come to $30-$50 more than an ultrasonic unit. Not huge, but real if you run one every night from November to March.

Comfort and how the room feels

This is the underrated part. In a cold bedroom, warm mist takes a little of the chill off the air near the machine, which many people find cozy in winter. It is the same reason a warm vaporizer feels pleasant when you have a cold.

Cool mist can make a warm room feel slightly fresher, and in a hot climate that is welcome. In a cold room, though, a cool fog can feel a touch clammy right at the outlet.
