Whole house
These tie into your furnace or ductwork and humidify the entire home from one point. They are the hands-off option once installed, but they cost more up front and usually want a plumber or HVAC tech. For a single dry bedroom, they are overkill.

How to size a humidifier to your room
This is where most people go wrong. They buy the biggest tank on the shelf, run it in a small bedroom, and end up with sweating windows by morning.
Sizing comes down to two numbers: the square footage of your space and the output capacity, measured in pints of water released over 24 hours. A bigger room needs more output to move the needle.

A neglected humidifier can blow bacteria and mold into the air you breathe, which defeats the whole point. The good news is that upkeep is simple once it becomes routine.
That pink or slimy film in the tank is bacterial buildup, and the crusty white scale is mineral deposit. Both mean it is past time to clean. The CDC and other health groups flag dirty humidifiers as a real indoor air risk.
- Empty the tank and refill with fresh water daily, not on top of yesterday’s water.
- Use distilled or demineralized water to cut white dust and scale, especially with ultrasonic units.
